Pre-Primary: Nursery, PP I & PP II | The Roots

The early years are the most delicate. At SMHS, Pre-Primary is designed around one priority above all: making every child feel safe, seen and genuinely happy to be in school.

Young minds ask questions relentlessly. Our facilitators meet that curiosity with patience and structure. The transition from home to school is handled gently, with familiar routines that build confidence over time.

The ENLIGHT curriculum forms the heart of Pre-Primary learning. It works through storytelling, dramatisation, counting games, role-play, art, music, puppet shows, field excursions and sports. Each activity is connected to a central theme through our 'Theme Time' approach, making every experience meaningful.

By the end of the Pre-Primary years, students have a solid foundation in Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, the social skills to work well with peers and a value system that carries them forward.

Examination Policy

Two assessments are conducted per academic year. Grades are awarded across both Scholastic and Co-Scholastic areas. Assessment is activity-based, designed to track growth without creating pressure.

Primary: Grade I to V | The Shoots

This is the phase where children begin to discover who they are. Likes, dislikes, strengths and curiosities start to surface, and SMHS gives students the space to explore all of it while building a strong academic foundation.

Facilitators at the Primary level are mentors first. They use quizzes, field excursions, project work, role plays, assembly presentations and group discussions to make subjects genuinely interesting.

The formal curriculum places strong emphasis on Languages, Mathematics, Community and Environmental Studies.

Examination Policy

Assessment is continuous across Scholastic and Co-Scholastic areas. The academic year has two terms, with three Periodic Tests, a Half-Yearly Examination and a Final Examination. Health and Physical Education, Work Education and Art Education are graded equally. Notebook submission, enrichment activities and project work also count towards the final grade, preparing students steadily for the CBSE secondary examination pattern.

Secondary: Grade IX & X | The Trees

Grade IX and X are where everything a student has learnt and explored begins to matter in a focused, purposeful way. This phase shapes professional trajectories. SMHS takes that responsibility seriously.

Facilitators at the Secondary level help students balance academics and co-curricular commitments without letting either suffer. Time management and self-management become core skills alongside the subject curriculum.

The academic programme at this stage goes beyond textbooks, building habits of research, analysis and independent thinking. SMHS also runs specialised career counselling sessions, helping students identify their strengths and aptitudes before making subject and career choices.

Examination Policy — CBSE Uniform Assessment Scheme

For Class IX and X: 80 marks for written examinations and 20 marks across Periodic Tests (10 marks), Notebook Submission (5 marks) and Subject Enrichment Activity (5 marks).

Both marks and grades are awarded for individual subjects. Co-scholastic performance in Work Education, Art Education and Health and Physical Education is graded separately. Discipline, including attendance, sincerity, behaviour and values, is also graded.

The uniform system benefits students whose families relocate, motivates through concrete marks and prepares students for the demanding workload of Classes XI and XII.
